France wins EU 2016 bid

(CNN) – France has been chosen to host the 2016 European Football Championship.

France beat off the challenge of Italy and Turkey to win the decision which was made by the 13 members of the UEFA executive committee.

UEFA president Michel Platini unveiled the name of France in a ceremony at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday.

It will the third time France has hosted the championship, having previously staged the competition in 1960 and 1984.

France won the competition in 1984, captained by Platini, and 2000.

“This is a beautiful day for us,” French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes told the official UEFA Web site.

France also hosted the World Cup in 1938 and 1998.

The bid was strongly supported by French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who spoke in the final round of bid presentations to the UEFA officials earlier in the day.

Turkish president Abdullah Gul was in Geneva to back his country’s bid, while Italy were represented by sports minister Rocco Crimi.

We are happy with the draw. We could have had an easier group, but then again it could have been harder. These groups are the qualification groups for the European Championship, so you don’t get easy ones. We have lots of respect for all the teams for Greece, Israel and Latvia who showed in the last campaign that they were really close to qualifying for the World Cup. Plus those three teams were in the same group and it was very tight, with Switzerland also there. Then you add Georgia and Malta, where we played a few years ago and it finished 1-1. We have plenty of respect, but we are confident and we have a good chance of fighting for qualification.

Who should host future tournaments?

France? Italy? Turkey? Norway/Sweden?

World 2018

Australia? England? Indonesia? Japan? Mexico? Russia? USA?Belgium/Holland? Portugal/Spain?

Other countries wont be hosting any of these tournaments, as the ones listed above are the nations that bidded to be hosts (/joint hosts) before the deadline.
Incase you didn’t already know, Poland and Ukraine will host Euro 2012 and Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup.

OQ: Why haven’t Yahoo changed the name of this section to FIFA 2010 World Cup and do you think that they’ll ever get around to doing it?
Not for me it doesn’t, it says 2006.
Also the next World Cup will be in Brazil, it’s already been confirmed. Hopefully 2018 for England though.
Isn’t it great when people change their answers. I could have sworn……..got me thinking im going mad sometimes.
That’s cool. Count Mexico out then.

I don’t see why a big Developed country like Spain, with large stadiums would need to make a joint bid. Surely it’s more for Portugal’s benefit. I don’t think it should go to them because it was not long ago when they hosted the Euro. This will only make it more unlikely for Spain to get it.

What is the best website for soccer news and updates?

I love soccer, and I would really like to know more of this sport and what is going on. Is there a site that provides the news from the Soccer world in Eirope and other countries? I am not too fond of American soccer, only the big leagues in Europe. I would like to watch soccer game highlights videos as well, and learn the score, upcoming matches. I would like to get more information on each team themselves. I would prefer it to be free, to sum it up I was wondering if there is a place that has all European soccer info in one website, while having soccer video highlights.
